CRUISIN' THRU MONTANA
I have always been fascinated by the open road. Even as a kid, TV shows (Then Came Bronson, Route 66, Movin’ On); movies (Easy Rider, Two-Lane Blacktop); and songs (dozens and dozens of songs!) that dealt with traveling, roaming the highways, “finding” the country---all intrigued me. My family used to travel to California & British Columbia to visit relatives, and I loved the trip there. Once I began to drive, it was not unusual for me to take off on a whim---one time we rolled out of Portland (where I grew up) to go “somewhere” and ended up on the Southern Oregon Coast. When I discovered motorcycles, the lure of the road was even stronger. I rode a Kawasaki 400 from Portland to the Okanogan Valley in BC and back---well, almost all the way back---the bike gave out in Hood River. Trips to the beach for lunch, Hood River for dessert, Walla Walla because we had never been there: all were done just because the road was available. Even now, my bike is my sanity---a means to get in the wind and clear my head.
For those of you who do not ride, I could never explain to you the feel of the wind in my face and the smells as I ride, the view of Mt St Helens on my right and Mt Hood on my left as I rolled down a 2-lane road, the smell of a field of mint as I rounded a corner in Eastern Washington, the truly breathtaking view of sunrise heading north up the Hood Canal on Highway 101, and the sheer pleasure of turning onto a road simply because I wanted to know where it went.
A lot of people have GPS units in their cars, trucks and even on their bikes. God forbid they should get lost or make a wrong turn. I can’t speak for them, but I will never have a GPS (or even a clock) on my scoot. Some of the best roads, and best rides, have been the result of being “lost”, or making a wrong turn. Plus, my passenger and I usually have a laugh about it too.
I am very fortunate to live in one of the best riding areas in the US…within a couple of hours of my house I can be at the Pacific Ocean, on Mount Rainier or Mount St. Helens, in the farms of Ellensburg or the Kittitas Valley, the desert of Eastern Washington, or Seattle, Portland, even Vancouver BC.
This website is about my rides and my experiences on the road, and the little discoveries I have made to make my riding more fun. New posts and stories will be posted often, so check back. If you ride, and see a trip that looks good, get out on the road! If you want more info about it, or want some help planning a ride, or just want to comment on what you read here, email me (kong@hiwayflyer.com). If you have a ride you like, send me a note about it!
And, if you like what you see, tell your friends about this site!
