July 12, 2011
So here we are in Dodge City, Kansas; about 9pm and still 95 degrees out. We rolled out of Pueblo, Colorado this morning about 8am, under sunny skies and high-70s, and got into Dodge City about 2pm (our time, not theirs...). Great ride, but about 15 miles out of Pueblo, Mike's bike sprung a fuel leak. We made a temporary repair along the roadside (special thanks to the Colorado State Trooper who stopped to see if we were OK), and headed back down the road. By the time we got into a town called Lamar, Colorado; the leak was back. We stopped at an auto parts store to get something to fix the leak (at least until we could make it to a Harley dealer to get the right part...). Across the street, I saw a motel with the sign:
I trotted across the street and went in to talk to the "American Owner"...little old guy and his wife,he bought the place when he was 77 years old and is now 84. Great rooms (he showed us one) and $41 per night for two people. His truck has a sign in the back advertising the motel, and he said he is the only motel owner in town that IS American. Can you imagine a hotel/motel in Tacoma, Seattle, Portland or any other major city having this sign out front?
So, here's what I have to say---if you ever find yourself in Lamar, Colorado; stay at the Holiday Motel on Main Street. Support American businesses!
